ALMOND All-In-One

Prunus amygdalus

All-In-One produces heavy crops of soft-shell nuts with sweet, flavourful kernels. This variety can be grown in Northern areas as it needs less winter chilling than other selections but needs a hot summer to ripen. Frost hardy. Semi dwarf - 4.5m.

Planting & Tree Care

SOIL

Prefers well drained fertile soil.

PLANTING SITE

Sunny, sheltered and frost free position.

CLIMATE

As a member of the Stonefruit genus (Prunus), Almond trees have a ‘chilling requirement’ of a certain number of hours below 7degC to produce fruit. Most varieties suit the temperate areas of the country to receive the required number of chilling hours, but some have ‘low chill’ requirements so can be grown in the warmer, northern areas of New Zealand.

WATERING

Water well during the early stages, during long dry periods and when the fruit is developing.

PESTS & DISEASES

Almond trees grow best with a spray program, particularly during spring, to prevent the likes of bacterial blast disease and leaf curl.

PLANTING IDEAS

Almond trees make stunning specimen trees with their outstanding display of fragrant blossoms in late Winter.

FRUIT

Nuts are ready to harvest in mid-late Summer.

POLLINATION

All varieties currently grown by Waimea Nurseries are self fertile.

TREE SIZE

Almond trees can range from 3-6m in height, apart from the dwarf variety 'Garden Prince' which only grows to 1.5-2m.

RECOMMENED PRUNING SYSTEM

Open centre/vase shape.
