Highly ornamental smaller tree (3 metres), that has been grown since ancient times for it's edible fruit. The distinctive brown fruit have rough textured skin. Allow fruit to remain on the tree as long as possible into winter and harvest when it picks easily. Store in a cool dry place and eat when the skin and flesh have softened. Medlar fruit can be eaten raw or cooked. Medlar trees will grow in almost any soil condition but prefers well drained, warm loam soil in a sunny position.

Medlar is self fertile. 

Grown on pear rootstock BA29 – Semi vigorous growing to 4/5 meters. 

SOIL

Prefers well drained fertile soil.

PLANTING SITE

Sunny and sheltered is best. Plant 3-4m apart from other trees.

CLIMATE

Medlar trees grow best in temperate regions. 

WATERING

Water well during the early years, during long dry periods and when the fruit is developing.

PESTS & DISEASES

Medlars are usually free of pests and diseases, though is a host of fireblight. 

PLANTING IDEAS

Medlar trees make an attractive specimen tree. 

FRUIT

 The fruit should be left on the tree until Winter and when it can be picked easily. It should then be stored in a cool place until the skin and flesh has softened, when it can be eaten fresh or cooked. 

POLLINATION

Self fertile. 

TREE SIZE

Grows to about 3m tall. 

RECOMMENDED PRUNING SYSTEM

Naturally grows into a tree with rounded head. Very little pruning is required.
