Ripens early season.   PEARS European pears provide some of the best fruit in the world. They generally require less care than apples and are an excellent choice for the home garden and orchard. As most pears need cross pollination, the planting of more than one variety is recommended or the growing of a double grafted selection. Most pears and nashi will cross pollinate each other. All are partially or fully self fertile although the presence of a pollinating variety is often used in commercial plantings to ensure good fruit set and to reduce fruit drop. Satsuma Japanese Blood red plum with juicy sweet red flesh. Medium size, mid season. Ideal eating, bottling, jams, jellies etc. Partially self-fertile. Pollinators include Santa Rosa. Sultan Japanese Early mid season, medium to large red fleshed, deep red skinned plum that is soft and juicy and has good flavour. It bears heavily on a rather low, spreading tree. It comes into bearing early, and is reliable. Recommended for it’s small size, very good dessert qualities, and reliability. Wilson’s Early Cross Good early variety, with smaller yellow skinned fruit overlaid red. Juicy yellow flesh. Partially self-fertile. Pollinators include Omega. Plums - Double grafted Dual combinations on the one tree to extend picking times and help ensure good pollination. Coe"s Golden Drop & Angelina Burdett Omega & Santa Rosa Black Doris & Santa Rosa PRUNE PLUMS Prunes are plums with high sugar levels that are typically oval in shape and are either freestone or can be dried without the need to remove the pit. They are high in sodium- and fat-free and a good source of fibre, but recent studies have shown them to be antioxidant superstars. Antioxidants work to prevent cancer, heart disease, cataracts, and other diseases associated with aging. As these are European plums they flower later than Japanese plums and therefore avoid problematic spring frosts. They are later fruiting and can be eaten fresh, dried or bottled. Trees are hardy, resistant to most bacterial diseases and are relatively easy to manage. While most are self fertile they set heavier crops when cross pollinated. Our selections represent the best performing varieties in HortResearch trials in various parts of the country. To quote: “Despite the excellent reputation of many of the cultivars imported, only three can be recommended for NZ. These are ‘Italian’, ‘Richard’s Early Italian’ and ‘Cacak Fruitful’. All three cultivars produced regular crops of high-quality, good flavoured fruit without being thinned.” Cacak Fruitful Extremely sweet dark purple smallish freestone plum with amber flesh. Italian The world’s most popular prune plum. Dark purple skin with light amber flesh that turns red when cooked. Freestone with fine textured, rich flavour and sweet flesh. Excellent for eating fresh, drying or bottling. Vigorous, cold hardy tree. Richard’s Early Italian Similar to Italian, but can be sweeter, slightly rounder and more productive. Ripens around 10-14 days earlier than Italian. Stanley Prune Prolific producer. Dark blue skinned smaller fruit with sweet and juicy golden flesh. Self-fertile and useful pollinator. Fruit is bigger and sweeter if crop is thinned. Late season.   QUINCES The quince has been under cultivation since ancient times. It was considered an emblem of happiness, love and fruitfulness. Over the years it has been used in marmalades, jellies and candies and is now also sought after for pastes and other culinary uses. All are self-fertile.
